30 Questions to Help Your ESL Students Practice Past, Present, and Future Tense
As an online ESL teacher, do you ever find teaching verb tenses to be dry and boring? Often, students simply recite the tenses or write them down, but it can be difficult for them to remember the words because they’re not using them in any relatable, real-world context.

One effective way to make learning about tenses more engaging and memorable is by using targeted questions. This approach allows students to actively practice tenses in meaningful situations, making it easier for them to understand and retain what they’ve learned.
Here are 30 questions (10 per each tense) that will encourage your students to speak, write, and think about their experiences in the past, present, and future tense.
Past Tense Questions (Simple Past & Past Continuous)

1) What did you do yesterday?
2) Where did you go on your last vacation? What did you do there?
3) Can you tell me about the last book you read?
4) How did you spend your weekend?
5) What was the best meal you had last week? Describe it.
