8 Fun Ways to Achieve Your New Year’s Resolutions

As we’re entering the third week of the new year, how are you doing with those new year’s resolutions?

Over the last two weeks, we shared 16 possible new year goals for educators. If you missed those articles, check them out here:

If you’re having a hard time following through with your resolutions, consider trying one of the following eight activities to help you stay motivated to keep those resolutions!

1) Resolution Bingo

Play Bingo with a friend by writing down 24 resolutions in a 5×5 empty Bingo sheet (with a free square) in the middle. These resolutions don’t have to be all serious, they could include fun activities like “attend 5 concerts,” “take a dance class,” or “read 10 books.” Each time you complete a resolution, mark it on your card. The first person to get a Bingo wins a prize, like being treated to dinner!

2) Habit Tracking App

If you have goals that require daily action, use a habit-tracking app to keep you on track and give you daily reminders. Some habits you may want to develop this year include getting daily exercise, stretching, practicing a new language, or writing a daily journal entry. Apps like Habitica, Streaks, or Loop can gamify the process and make it more rewarding.

3) Pair Your Goals With Fun Activities

Combine your resolutions with enjoyable activities to make them more appealing. For instance, if your goal is to exercise more, try signing up for a dance or Zumba class that feels more like a party than a workout. While you watch TV, you could also do some exercises. If you’re aiming to read more books, consider joining a book club that includes lively discussions and socializing.

4) Weekly Progress Review

Set aside time at the end of each week to reflect on your progress. Use a journal or a digital planner to jot down what worked, what didn’t, and what you can adjust. Acknowledge your small wins and make a plan for the week ahead. This habit can help you stay focused and adjust your resolutions as needed.

5) Join a Supportive Community

Find or create a group of like-minded individuals who are working on similar goals. Whether it’s a local meetup, an online forum, or a Facebook group, sharing your journey and getting encouragement from others can keep you accountable and motivated.

6) Reward Yourself

Build a reward system to celebrate milestones. For instance, if your resolution is to take a professional development course, treat yourself to something you’ve been wanting once you complete a module or reach a significant checkpoint. Rewards can be as simple as a relaxing spa day at home or as exciting as a weekend getaway.

7) Visualization Board

Create a vision board that represents your goals and aspirations for the year. Use magazines, digital tools, or drawings to assemble images and words that inspire you. Place the board where you can see it daily to remind yourself of your “why” and to keep your resolutions top of mind.

8) Break It Down

Large resolutions can feel overwhelming. Break them into smaller, actionable steps. For example, instead of saying, “I want to become fluent in Spanish,” start with, “I will practice Spanish for 15 minutes daily on Duolingo.” These smaller steps are easier to achieve and provide a sense of accomplishment that keeps you motivated.

What strategies have worked for you to keep your new year’s resolutions? If you have a unique way of sticking to your resolutions, share it in the comments! Remember that progress, not perfection, is the key to success.
